Sandlight Quicksand LED Lamp

The Sandlight Quicksand LED Lamp from Dune & Ash is a lamp and a moving picture at once. Fine sand falls slowly through the illuminated body, building and collapsing into dunes, so the lamp never looks the same twice and quietly holds attention on a desk or a shelf.

The chamber is sealed and the sand is graded fine enough to flow smoothly instead of clumping partway down, which is the difference between a piece that works and a gimmick. Backlighting is warm and diffused so the sand is lit from behind rather than glared at, and the frame turns over in its base to restart the fall in one movement. It works as a soft accent light through the evening as well as a focus object, and there is nothing to wind or set. Ten colour and size options are available.

It runs on a rechargeable battery and charges over USB, so no socket is needed behind it. Wipe the outer surface with a soft dry cloth and keep it on a level surface so the sand falls evenly. Do not open the sealed chamber, and keep it out of direct sunlight so the panel does not discolour over time.
